Privacy Policy — Mobile Application

Last updated: March 2026

Introduction

This privacy policy applies to the GitQuest mobile application, available on the App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android). It describes the data collected by the application, how it is processed and your rights as a user, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Application publisher

The GitQuest application is published by Anais Sparesotto, web developer and training manager. For any question regarding your data, you can contact her at: anais.camille.sparesotto@gmail.com.

Data collected

Data stored locally on your device

The majority of GitQuest data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to our servers:

  • Game progress: level, score, completed investigations, daily challenges completed, consecutive day streak.
  • User preferences: chosen theme (light, dark, system), font size, color blind mode, dyslexia font, sound and vibration preferences.
  • Game history: quiz answers, commands entered in the simulated terminal, play time.

Data that may be transmitted

If the application offers account creation or progress synchronization, the following data may be transmitted:

  • Account data: email address and username.
  • Progress data: to enable synchronization between devices.
  • Anonymized technical data: application version, operating system, device model, for improvement and bug fixing purposes.

Application permissions

GitQuest requests a minimal number of permissions to function:

  • Network access: required for displaying advertisements, account synchronization and online leaderboards. The game in local mode works offline, but advertisements require a connection.
  • Vibration: for haptic feedback during interactions (can be disabled in accessibility settings).
  • Notifications: only if you enable them, for daily challenge reminders. You can disable them at any time in your device settings.

GitQuest does not request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, location, photos or files.

Purposes of processing

The data collected is used exclusively to:

  • Enable the application to function and save your progress.
  • Synchronize your progress between devices (if you create an account).
  • Improve the application and fix bugs.
  • Send daily challenge reminders (if you enable notifications).

Your data is never sold to third parties.

Advertising

GitQuest displays advertisements to fund development and keep part of the content free. Advertisements are managed by Google AdMob (Google LLC).

Types of advertisements displayed

  • Banners: small advertisements displayed at the bottom of certain screens.
  • Interstitials: full-screen advertisements displayed between two actions (for example between two investigations).
  • Rewarded videos: advertisements you can choose to watch voluntarily in exchange for a reward (for example extra lives).

Data collected by Google AdMob

Google AdMob may collect certain data to display relevant advertisements and measure their performance:

  • Device advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, GAID on Android)
  • IP address (for approximate location)
  • Device information (model, operating system, screen size)
  • Advertisement interaction data (clicks, views)

This data is collected and processed by Google in accordance with its privacy policy (opens new window). GitQuest does not have access to personal data collected by Google AdMob.

Consent and control

When you first launch the application, you are asked to give your consent for personalized advertisements (in accordance with the GDPR and Apple's ATT framework on iOS). You can at any time:

  • Refuse personalized advertisements: non-targeted advertisements will be displayed instead.
  • Reset your advertising identifier: in your device settings (iOS: Settings > Privacy > Advertising; Android: Settings > Google > Ads).

In-app purchases

If the application offers in-app purchases (extra lives, premium content, etc.), transactions are managed entirely by the App Store (Apple) or Google Play (Google). GitQuest does not collect or store any payment data (credit card, payment identifier).

Third-party services

The application uses the following third-party services:

  • Apple App Store / Google Play: for application distribution and in-app purchase management.
  • Google AdMob: for displaying advertisements (banners, interstitials, rewarded videos). See the "Advertising" section above for details on data collected.
  • PostHog Inc. (United States): audience measurement and user journey analytics within the application (screens visited, sessions, game events). Data is anonymized. This service is only active if you enable the "Analytics" option in the application settings.

Protection of minors

GitQuest is an educational application that can be used by people of all ages. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16 without the consent of a parent or legal guardian. If you are a parent and believe your child has provided us with personal data, contact us so we can delete it.

Data retention

Data stored locally on your device is retained as long as the application is installed. Uninstalling the application deletes this data.

If you have created an account, synchronized account and progress data is retained as long as your account is active. You can request the deletion of your account and all associated data at any time.

Your rights (GDPR)

In accordance with the GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: obtain a copy of your personal data.
  • Right to rectification: correct inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure: request the deletion of your data and your account.
  • Right to data portability: receive your data in a readable format.
  • Right to object: object to the processing of your data.

To exercise these rights, contact us at anais.camille.sparesotto@gmail.com. We respond within 30 days.

Data security

We implement appropriate technical measures to protect your data: encrypted communications (HTTPS/TLS), secure on-device storage, secure authentication. Locally stored progress data benefits from the native security mechanisms of iOS and Android.

Complaints

If you believe your rights are not being respected, you can file a complaint with the CNIL: www.cnil.fr (opens new window).

This policy may be updated at any time. In the event of a significant change, users will be informed via the application. The date of the last update is indicated at the top of this page.
